Every November, Goose Island releases its beloved Bourbon County Stout line. Each year, the specialty beverages create a stronger bond between the celebrated beer brand and the bourbon brands that infuse flavor into the spirited releases. This year, Goose Island has brought back a new version of the beloved King Henry offering. This unique bottle will quickly become a highly sought-after option.

Goose Island Beer Co. originated the concept of bourbon barrel-aged beers. Over its storied history, the beer brand has worked with companies like Angel Envy, Blantons, and many more. Each offering is a storied collaboration between the beer brand and the heritage that each bourbon brand offers.

King Henry was first released in 2011. The concept was created by Goose Island’s brewmaster, Greg Hall, after a visit to Henry VIII’s cellar at Hampton Court Palace in London.

The specialty beverage is an English-style barleywine. It was aged in 23-year-old Pappy Van Winkle barrels, which were previously used in a 2010 Bourbon Bounty Rare Stout.

It instantly became a sought-after release. Drinkers praised its innovative barrel use and rich malty notes. For anyone who could find a coveted bottle, it was a prized possession.

King Henry II Makes Its Triumphant Return

After a 13-year hiatus, Goose Island has brought back King Henry II. The extremely limited release will only be available at Goose Island’s Chicago properties.

For this particular offering, the English-style Barleywine continues the storied tradition of the original offerings. With a nod to its royal namesake, the beverage is meant to be opulent, exclusive, and rare.

King Henry II spent a year in 2024 Bourbon County Rare barrels. The rich malt is the first flavor that is apparent. It is smooth, elegant, and enticing.

The crème brûlée notes add a touch of indulgence. While it might not necessarily have the satisfying crack of breaking into that creamy dessert, there is something magical about that luscious flavor. Combined with the malt, it is enticing and enjoyable.

Lastly, the toasty sweetness feels comforting. It sets the stage for a moment to quietly contemplate the unique yet familiar flavors that this rare release offers.

King Henry II’s 13.5% is strong, but it is quite drinkable. A slow sipper, it deserves to be shared with good friends over spirited conversations.

For anyone who thirsts for a taste of King Henry II, it will first become available on Black Friday at the Goose Island Taproom and Salt Shed Pub. Additional VIP Prop Day ticket holders will have the first chance to try the specialty release on November 15, 2025.

Time and again, drinkers are looking for the special, unique, or rare release. As more beverage brands look to crossover or collaborate, these particular offerings become highly coveted. It is more than just the few bottles on the shelf. It is the commitment to craft and pushing the industry forward that makes them a must purchase.
