Wyoming Whiskey Releases a Bourbon “Too Good to be Blended”

Wyoming Whiskey has released Barrel Strength Bourbon Whiskey #6429, a new limited-edition single-barrel expression from its Kirby, Wyoming, distillery. The wheated bourbon was selected by master blender Brendan Cook from the top barrels in the distillery’s rickhouses and is bottled at 124 proof (62% ABV).

The distillery identifies and isolates one or two exceptional barrels annually for its Barrel Strength line rather than blending them into its core range.

According to the brand, Cook discovers these barrels while sampling inventory across the distillery’s eight rickhouses. “He sometimes discovers a rare gem. Something too good to be blended,” a brand statement noted.

“These barrels are set aside and become our Barrel Strength,” the statement continued. “Chosen for unique character, they represent a true test of the Wyoming Whiskey spirit – as pure as bourbon making can be.”

Production for the Barrel Strength line is highly limited, with fewer than 500 bottles typically released each year. The distillery attributes volume variance to the significant angel’s share caused by Wyoming’s climate.

All Wyoming Whiskey expressions are aged for a minimum of five years in new charred oak barrels. The brand notes the dramatic daily temperature swings in the Big Horn Basin intensify barrel interaction, resulting in more concentrated flavor profiles.

This release is made from a mash bill of 68% corn, 20% wheat, and 12% malted barley.

The brand states that bottling the whiskey at barrel proof is done to “capture the maximum flavor and richness.”

Official notes from the brand describe a nose of “honey, apricot, vanilla and toasted almond.”

The palate delivers “cinnamon, graham wafer, caramel and powdered sugar,” with a finish of “coffee cake, crème brûlée, cinnamon and caramel.”

Wyoming Whiskey is now part of the Edrington portfolio, which also includes The Macallan and Highland Park Scotch whiskies. After initially taking a 35% stake in the distillery in 2018, Edrington increased its stake to 80% in April 2023.
