A bottle of Laphroaig Capsule 40-Year-Old has set a new distillery record, selling for $156,250 (£125,000) at the Distillers One of One auction in Scotland on October 10.
The sale marks the Islay single malt brand’s debut appearance at the biennial event, which was held at Hopetoun House in partnership with Sotheby’s.
The final price includes the buyer’s premium.
The full hammer price of $125,000 (£100,000) was donated directly to The Distillers’ Charity Youth Action Fund, which supports disadvantaged young people in Scotland.
The record-setting whisky was distilled in the early 1980s and is described as one of the last surviving Laphroaig whiskies from that era.
It matured in oloroso sherry-seasoned and ex-bourbon American oak hogsheads for 26 years before being married in oak until June 2022. The spirit is presented in a hand-blown green crystal decanter from Glencairn Crystal.
“This auction unites the Scotch whisky industry like no other, celebrating extraordinary and rare spirits,” said Daryl Haldane, private client director at Suntory Global Spirits. “We’ve supported this event from the beginning as a founder donor… and we’re delighted to now bring Laphroaig to the auction with this bold, unforgettable and record-breaking creation.”
According to the brand, the 46.5% ABV whisky has official tasting notes that include soft peach and charred citrus on the nose, a sweet palate with notes of aniseed and honeycomb, and a long, smoky finish.
