Rock Island Producer Douglas Laing Explores Wood Versatility
The Glasgow-based company, known for its Rock Island and other regional malts, has created this release using three distinct wood types. Virgin oak provides spice and toasted notes, while bourbon casks contribute vanilla and honey characteristics. Sherry casks round out the profile with fruit and warmth.
Tasting notes describe citrus and vanilla on the nose, with a palate featuring baking spice, baked apple and golden syrup. The finish delivers toffee, dark fruits, and oak.
“Our belief is that flavor is shaped throughout the whisky-making journey, but it is in maturation where it truly comes to life,” said Chloe Wood, Brand Manager at Douglas Laing. “The Epicurean Three Wood Finish is a testament to this, with layers of richness, spice, and sweetness intertwining to create a wonderfully versatile Lowland Malt. This limited-edition release showcases the art of wood and Whisky in perfect harmony, reinforcing The Epicurean’s reputation as the Master of Versatility.”

The small batch bottling of 1,920 units suggests a targeted release for collectors and enthusiasts. Premium packaging includes a foiled label, indicating the company’s push into higher-end market segments.
Distribution covers select international markets, though specific countries were not detailed in the announcement. The pricing at £65.00 or €77.00 places it in the premium single malt category.
Douglas Laing, established in 1948, operates as an independent bottler and blender. The family-owned business has built a reputation for regional Scottish whisky brands including Big Peat, Scallywag and Timorous Beastie alongside The Epicurean.
The Three Wood Finish joins The Epicurean’s core range, which typically features Lowland single malts. This limited release demonstrates ongoing innovation in wood finishing techniques across the Scotch whisky industry.
