Speyside distillery Aberlour has unveiled its new A’bunadh Sherry Cask Collection, a limited-edition series that pushes the boundaries of sherry cask maturation with its inaugural release bottled at 56.2% ABV.
Double Sherry Cask Maturation
“The Aberlour A’Bunadh Sherry Cask Collection represents a significant milestone, not just building upon the beloved Aberlour A’Bunadh tradition, but boldly pushing the frontiers of sherry cask influence,” said Graeme Cruickshank, Master Distiller at Aberlour.
The collection’s first expression undergoes double cask maturation, finished exclusively in first-fill Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. Master Distiller Graeme Cruickshank selected each cask for its aromatic profile and flavor characteristics, departing from the traditional A’bunadh style by using 100% first-fill sherry casks for maximum flavor extraction.

READ THE STORYThe whiskey is bottled at natural cask strength without chill filtration, preserving its original character. Official tasting notes describe a nose of juicy red apples, blackberries, sultanas, caramel wafers, demerara sugar, cinnamon, and stem ginger. The palate reveals blackcurrant, spiced pears, vanilla toffee, sticky dates, raisins, oak spice, and star anise, finishing with fruity, syrupy, and spiced notes.
Premium Sherry Cask Scotch Targets Collectors
The new series positions itself as a collectible range, with each future release promising different sherry finishes. Aberlour, founded in 1879 by James Fleming, operates in Speyside, Scotland’s leading whisky-producing region. The distillery has built its reputation on double cask maturation expertise, becoming the sixth most popular malt whisky globally and the leading brand in France.
The limited-edition release will be available in select markets from October 2025 at a suggested retail price of $130 (£95). The emphasis on first-fill sherry casks addresses growing consumer interest in bold, intensely flavored whiskies with clear provenance and maturation stories.
