The World's Best Scotch Whisky from the Top Shelf Awards Gala 2025

Scotch whisky made a statement at the 2025 Top Shelf Awards Gala, where judges highlighted releases that blended tradition with real innovation. This year’s winners showed how far the category has evolved, from revived Lowland legends to new luxury blends backed by bold ideas. Each bottle stood out for its craftsmanship, its story, and the choices behind how it was made.

The field covered every corner of Scotch whisky. There were age statement icons, creative NAS releases, and blends that relied on smart cask management and strong malt foundations. The result was a lineup that appealed to both newcomers and long-time collectors.

Here are the standout Scotch whiskies that earned top honors in 2025.

Isle of Skye 25 Year Old Blended Scotch: Best Blended Scotch – 16 Years & Older; Best Overall Blended Scotch

Tasting Notes: Oak, ginger, vanilla, red apple, citrus, malt, peat smoke, apricot

Find Your Next Bottle: $309

The Isle of Skye 25 Year Old took home top honors among blended Scotch whiskies. It is made by Ian Macleod Distillers, a family-owned company with a long history of producing classic Scotch blends.

The whisky contains a high proportion of malt whisky, including island malt with gentle peat influence. Every component has matured for at least 25 years in a mix of ex-bourbon and sherry casks. That long aging helps create depth and balance.

The brand dates back to 1933. Its success at the 2025 Top Shelf Awards shows how well traditional blending can still perform today. The judges at the SFWSC called the whisky “a beautifully crafted Scotch”.

D’YAVOL VORTEX Blended Scotch: Best Blended Scotch – No Age Statement

Tasting Notes: Orchard fruit, vanilla, fudge, smoke, malty sweetness, oak

Find Your Next Bottle: Currently available exclusively in India

D’YAVOL Vortex is a new blended Scotch that quickly earned attention. It is built around a high malt content, which gives the blend real weight and character. The whisky brings together unpeated malts from the Lowlands, Highlands, and Speyside, along with a measured amount of peated Islay malt.

Some of the components are finished in sherry casks, which add richness and help create the layered profile the brand wanted.

Vortex is bottled at 43.5% ABV without chill filtration. It was launched in the Indian market in 2024 by D’YAVOL, a luxury spirits venture that focuses on modern design and high-quality production.

Highland Park 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch: Best Single Malt Scotch – Up To 12 Years

Tasting Notes: Heathered honey, citrus, burnt orange, jasmine, fruitcake, peppery spice, oak, orange zest, Orkney peat

Find Your Next Bottle: $46

Highland Park 12 Year Old is one of the most recognizable single malts from the Orkney Islands. The distillery uses local peat that contains a high amount of heather. This produces a gentle, aromatic smoke that sets Highland Park apart from coastal or medicinal styles.

The whisky matures for at least 12 years in sherry-seasoned American and European oak casks. These casks are a core part of the distillery’s identity and shape the character of the spirit from the start.

Highland Park still practices traditional floor malting on site, which supports consistency and helps preserve its historic production methods.

Royal Brackla Palo Cortado 18 Years Old Highland Single Malt Scotch: Best Single Malt Scotch – 13 to 19 Years

Tasting Notes: Rich spices, creamy vanilla, soft fruits, citrus

Find Your Next Bottle: $171

Royal Brackla 18 Year Old stands out because of its connection to royal history and its use of Palo Cortado sherry casks. The distillery received the first Royal Warrant granted to a Scotch whisky producer in the 1830s, which helped shape its identity as the King’s Own Whisky.

The 18 year old begins maturation in ex-bourbon casks, then finishes in rare Palo Cortado sherry casks. This type of sherry is known for its mix of fresh citrus and gentle oxidative depth. The whisky is bottled at 46% ABV without chill filtration or added color, which preserves texture and authenticity.

Rosebank 31 Year Old Lowland Single Malt Scotch: Best Single Malt Scotch – 20 Years & Older; Best Single Malt Scotch; Best Overall Scotch; Best In Show Whisk(e)y

Tasting Notes: Citrus, soft vanilla, candied almonds, chamomile, berry, baked banana, sweet peach, oak

Find Your Next Bottle: $2,125

The Rosebank 31 Year Old represents one of the final releases from the distillery’s pre-closure era. Rosebank was mothballed in 1993, which makes any surviving casks especially important to Lowland whisky history.

The spirit was triple distilled and condensed through traditional worm tubs, a combination that created Rosebank’s light but structured style.

The 31 year old matured in refill casks that protected its delicate character over three decades. It was bottled at 48.1 percent ABV without chill filtration or added color. Its success at the 2025 Top Shelf Awards highlights the influence and rarity of Rosebank’s historic stock.

The judges at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, the competition that precedes the Top Shelf Awards Gala, called the whisky “the pinnacle of quality and artistry.”

Loch Lomond Remarkable Alchemy Single Malt Scotch: Best Single Malt Scotch – No Age Statement

Tasting Notes: Citrus, orchard fruit notes, smoke, tropical fruit, spice

Find Your Next Bottle: Global travel retail exclusive

Loch Lomond Remarkable Alchemy shows how far the distillery is willing to push its production methods.

The whisky is made using Loch Lomond’s straight neck pot stills, which allow the team to shape a lighter and fruit-forward spirit even when they use peated malt. The whisky matures in three types of American oak casks. These include first-fill bourbon, refill bourbon, and re-charred American oak. It is then finished in Colombian oak, a rare choice in Scotch whisky.

Remarkable Alchemy is bottled at 46.8% ABV without chill filtration and is part of a travel retail exclusive series. As such, any whisky lover who wants to get their hands on this release should keep an eye out in selected airports.

Compass Box Crimson Casks Blended Malt Scotch Whisky: Best Blended Malt Scotch

Tasting Notes: Chocolate fudge cake, clove, cardamom, plum jam, redcurrant jelly, cherry, toffee, oak, raisin, honey, brown sugar

Find Your Next Bottle: $60

Compass Box Crimson Casks is a blended malt shaped by the company’s creative approach to whisky making. Compass Box is known for its transparency and for treating blending as a form of modern craftsmanship.

Crimson Casks brings together single malts from Glen Moray, Benrinnes, Teaninich, and a Speyside distillery near Aberlour. About 78% of the whisky comes from wine seasoned casks, mainly Oloroso sherry butts.

Smaller shares matured in first-fill bourbon and custom French oak for added structure. The whisky is bottled at 46% ABV with natural color and no chill filtration. It is now part of the core range.
