Scotch whisky isn’t only for the fireside. With The Nite Owl, Distilled Beverages is bringing a bold, night-focused energy to the category. One designed for the late bars, the mixology crowd, and the next generation of whisky drinkers. With its eye-catching design, accessible price point, and flavour profile built for versatility, The Nite Owl is reimagining what a blended scotch can be.

We caught up with Chris Leggat, Founder and Director of Distilled Beverages, to talk about building a whisky brand for modern drinkers, balancing creativity with quality, and why they’ve gone all-in on creating a new staple rather than chasing the limited-edition trend.

What Is The Nite Owl?

The Nite Owl is a blended scotch whisky built with bartenders and cocktail culture in mind. A marriage of malt and grain whiskies, it’s designed to hold its own behind the bar or on the shelf and is equally at home in a chaser, a highball, or a late-night Old Fashioned.

Created by Distilled Beverages, The Nite Owl was developed in collaboration with whisky experts, including master blenders and Keepers of the Quaich. The result is a bold yet balanced dram that combines juicy tropical fruit and citrus with dessert-like notes of honey, vanilla, and toffee apple.

But what really sets it apart is its positioning: rather than leaning into tradition or exclusivity, The Nite Owl embraces nightlife, contemporary design, and cultural accessibility. Priced at £22 RRP and crafted with consistency in mind, this is a spirit that invites repeat pours and creative serves. Its catchy tagline is: When dusk falls, the Nite Owl calls.

Chris Leggat, Founder and Director of Distilled Beverages, the company behind The Nite Owl, told us more about the ethos of the brand and why The Nite Owl is the perfect whisky for a new generation of drinkers. See the full Q&A below.

1. The Nite Owl is a striking name. What’s the story behind it, and how does it shape the identity of the brand?

For us, the name evokes a sense of mystery and character — much like the whisky itself. It’s for those who appreciate depth, find inspiration after dark, and aren’t afraid to stand apart. That spirit of individuality and nocturnal charm is woven into everything we do, from our branding to the whisky in the bottle.

Whisky doesn’t have to be the final drink of the night — it’s whatever way turns your head. This wise old spirit is dedicated to the night, the late bars, the hustle, where the magic of mixology comes alive.

2. You describe The Nite Owl as bold and character-driven. How do you balance strong visual storytelling and design with delivering serious quality in the glass?

Great question. We spent a lot of time with master blenders, Keepers of the Quaich, and other experts to shape our dream dram. The goal was to create a Scotch that stayed true to its roots but offered real versatility — a character that could sit comfortably alongside Bourbon and Rum.

Once we had the liquid right, we turned to the creative side. Our visual identity is bold because we want to challenge the conventions of what a whisky brand can look like, and resonate with a new clientele seeking an elevated speed-rail offering they feel confident consuming and sharing.

Our design team had a blast with the process — it pushed our own thinking too. Ultimately, we wanted a fantastic product with an approachable brand at a sensible price.

3. While many new whisky brands focus on limited runs, you’ve gone the other way. What made you commit to creating something continually available from the outset?

We wanted to build something lasting — a whisky people could return to time and again. Limited editions are exciting, but they can feel exclusive or fleeting. The Nite Owl is about accessibility without compromise.

We set out to create a signature expression that could become part of people’s routines, rituals, and celebrations — not just a one-off experience. That meant investing in consistency, quality, and availability from day one.

4. You’re clearly aiming to connect with a new generation of whisky drinkers. What are you doing differently to engage this audience, and what sort of response are you seeing so far?

We’re speaking to a generation that values authenticity, creativity, and experience. That means meeting them where they are — online, in culture, and in conversation. We’ve focused on storytelling, design, and community-building rather than the traditional whisky route.

The response has been incredibly encouraging — people are resonating with the brand, not just the whisky. They’re sharing it, gifting it, and making it part of their own stories, which is exactly what we hoped for.

This summer, Antonia from our team is launching The Nite Owl Student Ambassador Programme across the UK — they’ll help guide our future too… we have only just taken flight with The Nite Owl and we don’t want to rush things, but we are excited about the future.
