Behind The Macallan‘s transformation from respected distiller to global luxury brand stands a figure whose influence extends far beyond whisky: Allan Shiach.

Joining the board in 1963, Shiach continued a family legacy that included his grandfather, Dr Allan Shiach, and great-grandfather, Roderick Kemp. But it was his vision for The Macallan‘s future that would reshape the whisky industry.

“Until 1980 the company’s main business was selling bulk to blenders for their whiskies,” Shiach explained in a recent email exchange. “Macallan was top dressing in the majority of blended whiskies available. But those companies were beginning to look only within their own output for their blends.”

This shifting landscape prompted a bold strategy. The distillery doubled its capacity and began laying down stock for future single malt releases. As Shiach describes it: “Like creating a restaurant with all the nappery, cutlery, food and staff. And then waiting at least ten years before letting a customer inside!”

Creating a Legacy

The transformation required significant investment. The company went public, raising funds for larger mash tuns, additional stills, and crucially, more warehouses. Throughout the expansion, quality remained paramount. “We were apprehensive that the additional output be of the same calibre and flavour as the original,” Shiach noted. “We replicated the original stills. We continued with direct firing.”

READ THE STORY

By the early 1980s, The Macallan began implementing its marketing strategies. The discovery of exceptional aged stock in the warehouses led to the creation of the Anniversary Malt series. Each 25 Year Old came with a personal letter signed by Shiach himself, establishing a precedent for premium whisky presentation that continues today.

The success of the Anniversary Malts paved the way for other prestigious releases, including collaborations with artists Peter Blake and Valerio Adami. These bottles would later achieve record-breaking auction prices.

What makes Shiach’s story particularly remarkable is his parallel career in film and television. Writing under the pen name Allan Scott, he has crafted screenplays for notable films including Don’t Look Now and more recently served as executive producer of Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit.

After three decades at The Macallan, Shiach left knowing the foundation had been laid for future success. The Anniversary Malt series, with its distinctive wooden boxes and vintage-dated releases, remains a testament to his vision of what single malt whisky could become.

Today’s whisky collectors might take for granted the concept of premium single malt Scotch, but it was pioneers like Shiach who first imagined it. As current prices for early Macallan releases demonstrate, that vision has more than stood the test of time.
