The recently revived Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery in downtown Nashville, Tennessee, which opened its doors to the public in late November, brings back into a family a historic distilling tradition dating back to the late 1800s. It was during this time that one Charles Nelson started a whiskey production outfit later shuttered by the forces of Prohibition. Now brothers Andy and Charlie Nelson, the great-great-great grandsons of Charles Nelson, have brought it back to life in part through their Belle Meade bourbon brand, which recently saw the introduction of a limited edition bottling finished in sherry casks.The Belle Meade Bourbon Sherry Cask Finish is a nine year old sourced bourbon said to have been blended and finished like “a fine Scotch.” The brothers took from their regular bourbon stock the best of what they felt was available, finishing the resulting whiskey in Oloroso sherry casks that were imported from Spain.
What’s resulted is a limited edition release clocking in at 90.4 proof and pricing online in the neighborhood of $80 a bottle. There’s not much in the way of tasting notes on this bourbon at this point, expect to note it is “rich, intricate and balanced,” according to those behind it.
