Proof and Wood Blame Canada! Rye Whiskey Review

Proof and Wood's 22-year Canadian rye whiskey from Alberta showcases the best of Canadian whisky with its complex blend of sugar, spice, and everything nice. This exceptional bottling proves doubters wrong about the quality of Canadian whisky.

Tasting Notes:

About:
Blame Canada! from Proof and Wood has composed a 22 year rye whiskey distilled in 2001 in Alberta, Canada. This was aged 22 years before blending. Now, 2025 minus 2001 does not equal 22. My best guess is that, similar to bourbon, you must use the youngest whiskey in a bottling as the age statement. Therefore, some component of the rye or corn was only 22 years old at the time of bottling. Which means you have whiskey from 22-24 years in this blend.

There were only 14 barrels used, and the profile is a mix of 91% Rye, 9% Corn.
Appearance:
Golden almost amber with yellow beams.
Nose:
Just a bright delight. Pear fruit, cinnamon, rye spice, stewed apples, orange citrus, and delicate vanilla.
Palate:
Honey balanced by black pepper, nice molasses sugars with orange peel. The profile evolves ever so slightly with successive tastes with cinnamon, vanilla, rye spices and lovely soft oak.
Finish:
A viscous mouthfeel and a medium to long hold. It grew slowly and held beautifully. There is clove, cinnamon, and vanilla cloaked with just a hint of cigar tobacco.
Comments:
I’m not positive what we’re blaming Canada for, but they deserve some respite for this one. Just a lovely blend of sugar, spice, and yes everything nice. Great Canadian whisky that shows off some delightful spicey notes but gives you excellent drops of complex and dark sugars.

This is a bottle to show off to people who doubt the quality of Canadian whisky. It’s a neat bottle design to be truthful, but also a nice one to pull out early in an evening to pass around and put some credit on this type of whisky. I really enjoyed this one and I think you will too regardless of whiskey experience.
