Tasting Notes

About:

Michter’s Toasted Barrel Finish Kentucky Sour Mash is a limited-release whiskey distilled and bottled in Kentucky. It is bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV), made using a sour mash recipe that is neither bourbon nor rye. The whiskey is first aged in new, fire-charred American oak barrels before being finished in a second barrel crafted from 18-month air-dried wood that has been toasted rather than charred.
Appearance:
Thin, shimmery yellowish maple syrup.
Nose:
Toasted pine, roasted yellow pepper.
Palate:
Remarkably full mouthfeel. Perfect mild charming warmth. Unsweetened caramel is also found here, as in the Schenk’s. This has a bottom sweet zone of very dry fruit. The play of the sourdough effect puts a beautiful boundary on the yeast side. The toasting might be what calms it down.
Finish:
Very long, mild, and sweetening and drying toward the end.
Comments:
Great to be able to sample these two whiskies at the same sitting.
