Tasting Notes

About:

This series spotlights America’s emerging estate distillery movement. As an independent bottler, Lost Lantern has searched for estate distilleries, those who grow and generally distill their own products, for this release. Lost Lantern buys and bottles single barrels and offers them for sale. Some across the country at select retailers, some exclusively online.

This bottle is for sale exclusively online.
Appearance:
Mahogany turning into burnt umber.
Nose:
This proof is not a joke. Give yourself time to adjust and take it easy on yourself or you might fry your nose.

Ignoring the alcohol flavors, we find peach, dark sugars, baking spices, pineapple, flowers, and sweet breads.
Palate:
Hot in the best way. Pepper corn, cayenne, dark chocolates, tart cherries, molasses cookies, cigar box, full body cigar tobacco, rye spices, and charred oak.
Finish:
Something sat right at the back of the throat for me, it was really one of the only sour notes. However, it faded quickly. We have notes of rye bread, thick molasses sugar. The finish hits and holds on your tongue, teeth, and throat. It is cloying with light charcoal; and black pepper before fading away.
Comments:
What a ride! This was fun. This whiskey is hot and complex. It is not something for everyone, but if you like robust beverages, you’ll like this. There are a lot of flavors competing for your attention, but they all complement each other without becoming overwhelming.

I had a small sampler from the bottler. If I had a bigger sample, I likely would have tried it with a drop or two of water. I would recommend doing that if you pick up a bottle. I really enjoy hot whiskey, ones that remind you “yeah this is whiskey!” without making you simultaneously think, “… I like this?”

Corbin Cash is a fun and worthwhile pick-up for those who like whiskey at 60+ ABV.

Editor’s Note: This whiskey was either bought as a sample by The Whiskey Wash or provided to us as a review sample by the party behind it. Per our editorial policies, this in no way influenced the outcome of this review.
