Blender and bottler Douglas Laing & Co. recently released an Amarone Wine Cask Finished Lowland Malt Scotch Whisky as part of its Epicurean Wood Series.

A statement from Douglas Laing notes that this is the seventh single cask release in the specialist “Wood Series,” and this expression comes bottled at 48% ABV.

The Wood Series already features a Tawny Port Finish and a White Port Finish, among others, and the blender looks to demonstrate that flavor is created throughout the whisky-making process, but significantly during the interaction between the whisky and the wood when it’s in an oak cask.

The final tasting notes call this expression “full-bodied with waves of dark chocolate, ripe cherries and a sensational spiciness.”

READ THE STORY

To make The Epicurean Limited Edition, the Lowland Scotch is first matured in American oak before being re-racked into a single Amarone cask for a second maturation period of two years.

The Amarone cask comes from the Italian region of Valpolicella, an area in the Northeast that’s known for its quality Amarone wine production.

“The ethos behind our Epicurean brand is that of enjoying the finer things in life, and this is exactly what our innovative Wood Series encapsulates,” said Scott Morrison, The Epicurean’s brand manager.

The whisky comes packed in a premium gift tube, and The Epicurean Amarone Finish Limited Edition has a suggested retail price of £65.00/€73.00 from specialist retailers.
