The Balvenie Tun 1509 Scotch Whisky Now In Batch 2

The Balvenie Tun 1509, Batch 2The much loved The Balvenie Tun 1509, the spiritual successor to the Scottish distillery’s now retired Tun 1401 whisky line, debuted last year with Batch 1. Enough time has now passed apparently that we are onto Batch 2, which is starting to quietly surface in European retail outlets.

The Balvenie Tun 1509, Batch 2, according to The Scotsman, made its debut this month for a price point of £250, or around $390 USD. Whereas 42 casks were used to source Batch 1, the newer iteration, from what I’ve been seeing on retailer sites, is a slightly smaller draw at 32 casks. These include 23 American oak and 9 European oak sherry casks, which were married for a number of months “in Warehouse 24” before being bottled at 50.3% ABV.

Only 8,500 bottles are noted as being available for global retail. Tasting notes for this whisky indicate it is “luscious with aromas of honey, orange peel, sweet oak vanilla and a delicate ginger spiciness. To taste it is richly sweet, combining elegant honey with tangy citrus and gentle vanilla, overlain with subtle notes of cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg.”

What should also be of interest to Scotch drinkers with this release is the included “visual representations of the flavour profile of each of the 32 constituent casks and the overall character of the resulting single malt.”
