The Balvenie Replaces Tun 1401 Whisky With New Tun 1509 Scotch

tun1509The Balvenie distillery’s workhorse Tun 1401 whisky series, after nine bottlings, has been put out to pasture by its Scottish masters. In its place instead has been announced Tun 1509, which reportedly will allow its head distiller access to a wider range of so-called component casks to produce releases with more complexity.

Those at the distillery said that for Tun 1509, Batch 1, 42 casks were selected to create it. Of these,

35 are traditional American oak barrels and seven are European oak sherry butts – all from the distillery’s precious aged stocks. Among these casks are some of the finest The Balvenie has to offer. And all have been allowed to marry together and sit for several months in Warehouse 24 before bottling.

What’s resulted from this new non-age statement Scotch is a product that’s non-chill filtered and bottled at 47.1% ABV. Tasting notes for this global release are below per The Balvenie.

The result is an expression that is deep and rich on the nose with floral notes and clear hints of sweet vanilla and orange peel. It is velvety smooth to taste with distinct tangy citrus, mellow cinnamon spice and blossom honey overtones. In short, this is a truly exceptional expression.
