Whiskey Review: Rebel 100 Straight Rye Whiskey

Tasting Notes:

About:
100 proof (50% ABV), mash bill: 51% rye, 45% corn, and 4% malt, 750 ml MSRP $19.99.
Appearance:
Burnt amber.
Nose:
The initial fleeting rubber eraser smell at first nose segues into rustic flavors of lemon citrus, honey, green peppercorn, and raw pear.
Palate:
The palate offers spicy notes of warm grains, vanilla, dry raisins, and sawdust.
Finish:
Comments:
This rye is a straightforward sipper that isn’t overly complex, with a moderate flavor profile of well balanced earthy rawness. It offers a medium to long, dry finish with a texture that’s slightly more grainy than smooth. Definitely not a bad rye whiskey for the price point.

In March of 2023, Lux Row Distillers announced the release of their newest Rebel brand family variant: Rebel 100 Straight Rye Whiskey.

The Rebel brand of bourbon whiskey, formerly known as Rebel Yell bourbon, was acquired in 1999 by the David Sherman Corporation, which was rebranded as Luxco in 2006. Lux Row Distillers is owned by Luxco, which was founded in 1958 by the Lux Family in St. Louis, Missouri. Luxco is a producer, supplier, importer, and bottler of alcohol beverage products.

In addition to those made at the Lux Row Distillery, which opened in Spring of 2018 in Bardstown, Kentucky, some other well known spirits brands within the Luxco portfolio come from such distilleries as Limestone Branch Distillery in Lebanon, Kentucky, Ross & Squibb Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, and Destiladora González Lux in Jalisco, Mexico.

Pop culture enthusiasts may find it interesting to know that British rocker Billy Idol got the inspiration for his song “Rebel Yell” after attending a party with the Rolling Stones, whose members Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ron Wood were drinking from a bottle of Rebel Yell bourbon.

Bottled at 100 proof, Rebel 100 Straight Rye Whiskey is aged for two years in new charred American white oak barrels. It’s made from a mash bill that consists of 51% rye, 45% corn, and 4% malt. It’s distilled and aged in Indiana and bottled for Lux Row Distillers of Bardstown, Kentucky. According to the brand’s official tasting notes Rebel 100 Straight Rye Whiskey “features a spicy nose that opens into rich rye flavor balanced by hints of vanilla.”

“Based on the continued success of both Rebel 100 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, we’ve elevated the proof of its rye counterpart,” said Eric Winter, brand manager for Rebel, in a prepared statement. “Rebel 100 Rye drinkers still will enjoy the award-winning smooth, spicy rye flavor of Rebel Rye at a proof level that amplifies its taste profile and stands out even better in classic cocktails.”

Rebel 100 Straight Rye Whiskey is available from retailers across the US with an MSRP of $19.99 per 750 ml bottle.
