The Macallan Unveils Lunar New Year-Themed Packaging

The Macallan—which has dropped both super-high-end expressions and ordinary, but beautifully-packaged whiskies recently—has announced new limited-edition packaging for their Double Cask 12 Years Old expression that commemorates the recent Lunar New Year.

This year (The Year of The Pig) is the second annual Macallan bottling that celebrates the holiday, and the packaging is said to feature “striking red and gold accents.” It is also noted by the distillery that “taking design inspiration from one of The Macallan’s iconic Six Pillars, each beautiful gift box shines a light on the Curiously Small Stills through a beautiful illustration in honor of this festive celebration.” The Lunar New Year, which took place on February 5 this year, is celebrated throughout East Asia and in diasporic communities worldwide.

The whisky itself, the Macallan Double Cask 12 Years Old, is a 12-year-old single malt aged in a combination of European oak barrels and American-via-Spain barrels used to age both bourbon and sherry.

The distillery’s official tasting notes for this release are below:

Color: Harvest sun

Nose: Creamy butterscotch, candied orange and vanilla custard

Palate: Honey, spices and citrus, balanced with raisins and caramel

Finish: Oak lingers, warm, sweet and drying

ABV: 43 percent

The Macallan Double Cask 12 limited edition Lunar New Year pack is available now in the states, and is sold in packs of two bottles, in the commemorative packaging, for a suggested retail price of $120.
