Benriach Introduces Latest Malting Season Bottling

Speyside’s Benriach Distillery has unveiled its third bottling of Malting Season, a rich single malt that’s made entirely from the distillery’s historic floor maltings.

A statement from the whisky maker notes that every year, Benriach is one of a handful of Scottish distilleries that practices this century-old tradition, a job that requires the steady and delicate hand of Benriach’s whisky-making team.

The distiller’s notes show that the Third Edition of Malting Season is made from concerto barley, chosen by Master Blender Rachel Barrie.

The floor malted spirit matures in virgin oak and first-fill bourbon casks, giving a natural cask-imparted golden barley color.

Stewart Buchanan, Benriach’s global brand ambassador, said, “Every year during ‘Maltings Season’ our team hand malt select barley onsite. This historic process pays tribute to our founder, John Duff, and the slow craft of his historic maltings which we continue to this day in the pursuit of exceptional flavor.”

He said that each new addition of Malting Season uses carefully chosen barley types and individual bottling strengths, which makes each annual edition one-of-a-kind.

“Malting Season Third Edition has malt sweetness on the nose with wild bergamot, pear and meadowsweet honey. The palate leads to a burst of clementine, floral honey and gentle barley spice, followed by flavors of apricot, malted almond and traces of wild cherry,” Buchanan added.

Benriach Malting Season Third Edition clocks in at 48.3% ABV and is now available in select global markets. It has a suggested retail price of £110.
