Tasting Notes

About:

Launched in 2025, the Tomatin 10-Year-Old Bourbon Cask is a Highland single malt matured exclusively in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels. Bottled at 40% ABV.
Appearance:
Bright Gold
Nose:
Very fresh aromas on the nose, led by lemon sherbet and crisp green apples alongside a touch of apricot. The fresh fruits are followed by buttery pastry and white chocolate sweetness which lead into caramel, oak, and a touch of white pepper.
Palate:
The palate initially opens with a thin, oily and slightly watery mouthfeel, but is quickly redeemed by intense surging lemon sherbet leading some caramel and honey sweetness. Soft fruits including apricots and peaches follow, before the crisp green apples return.
Finish:
Short to medium length, but a clean and fresh finish with lingering lemon citrus and apples, before a touch of dry peppery oak at the close.
Comments:
The Tomatin 10-Year-Old Bourbon Casks clearly uses some active first-fill bourbon casks for maturation, there’s plenty of caramel and oak notes. But it’s the bold and clear aromas and flavours of lemon sherbet and fruits which were the memorable part of this whisky experience for me, even redeeming the initial thin mouthfeel on the palate. I’d like to see Tomatin release a version at 46% ABV, similar to some of the distillery’s other expressions as I feel this would be outstanding. Overall, this is a vibrant and easy drinking bourbon cask matured whisky which is easily accessible and will appeal to fans of bourbon, lighter whisky styles or beginners.
