Tasting Notes

About:

A new twist on a classic. Jura Caribbean Rum Cask takes the easy-going style of single malt from the Isle of Jura and has matured it in some ex-Caribbean rum casks for additional tropical layers and flavours.
Appearance:
Orange Gold
Nose:
Salted toffee, grilled mango, red chilli pepper, Basque cheesecake, baked vanilla, brown sugar and some decent molasses notes.
Palate:
Fresh, vibrant and little salty, too! You get those toffee notes from the nose, but it comes across as a little more salted caramel, fudge chews, mango and chilli salsa and freshly malted barley. You still keep Jura’s effervescent style of spirit, it almost feels fizzy in this. The rum is adding a longer finish and some very welcome Caribbean spice notes of red chilli, coriander seeds and citrus oil bitterness.
Finish:
An almost rum soaked raisin note. A richness that is venturing into almost Cognac in all honesty. There’s some welcome gentle spice as we get through to the end of the whisky, but for a 40% style the finish does linger around for quite a while.
Comments:
Jura has always been a tricky one for me. I know people who hunt down independent bottled versions for the sake of some bigger style to the whisky, but the official bottlings are well loved for a reason. They’re soft, welcoming and, as a spirit, Jura is very accommodating to so many different types of cask. I’ve personally always loved it in wine casks, which isn’t something I can say for many other Scottish whiskies. This is an easy drinker with a twist. It’s not a mind blowing whisky, but it’s something that many people will end up having in their house.
