Tasting Notes

About:

A well-sherried single malt expression from England’s Cotswolds Distillery. Distilled from local barley, then matured in a combination of American and Spanish oak hogsheads and butts, seasoned with Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry. A small batch release of 9900 bottles, bottled at 57.4% ABV and non-chill filtered with natural colour.
Appearance:
Rich Copper
Nose:
Aromas of demerara sugar, Bakewell tarts and fruitcake, accompanied by a touch of roasted nuts and coffee beans.
Palate:
On the palate rich mouthcoating sherry opens accompanied by stewed dark cherries, raisins and sultanas. The sherry and fruits give way to nutty notes of roasted almonds.
Finish:
A spicy and peppery medium length finish, very drying with a flash of dried fruits fading into bitter coffee.
Comments:
The Cotswolds Sherry Cask release demonstrates plenty of sherry cask influence from those Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez seasoned American and Spanish oak hogsheads and butts. There are clear notes of stewed cherries, dried fruits and roasted nuts. I found the finish to be very drying with a slightly dominating bitter coffee note, which would lead me to personally score closer to 7.5 out of 10. But I can appreciate some whisky drinkers prefer a more drying sherry influence, so let’s be generous and say 8 out of 10.
