Tasting Notes

About:

The second single malt expression released by North Wales Aber Falls distillery. Initially matured in bourbon and virgin oak casks before being finished in Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. The Aber Falls distillery works closely with local farmers to grow Welsh barley in efforts to ensure sustainability and quality. Bottled at 40% ABV.
Appearance:
Pale Gold
Nose:
Gentle aromas on the nose, beginning with vanilla and toffee sweetness accompanied by some orange zest citrus. There are sherried sultanas, giving way to light clove and oak spice alongside mixed nuts.
Palate:
A light and oily opening on the palate, with a creamier mouthfeel texture developing. Vanilla fudge sweetness shifts into sherried fruitcake, which then gives way to gentle barley spice and drying malt.
Finish:
A warming finish of lightly drying oak and pepper, with a lingering echo of malt.
Comments:
Aber Falls Sherry Cask is a gentle approachable Welsh malt whisky. There’s a little sherry influence with the dried fruitcake notes, buts it’s the toffee fudge sweetness shifting into warming spice and malt which lead. Feels like a relatively short sherry cask finish. Aber Falls Sherry Cask isn’t overly complex, but I did enjoy the malty note. In truth, I’m probably closer to a score of 5.5, but let’s be generous and say 6 out of 10. For a beginner’s whisky, a gentle drinker, or exploration of Welsh malts on a budget Aber Falls Sherry Cask expression is a safe choice at the price point.
