Highland distillery Tomatin has launched a limited-edition single cask whisky to commemorate the 2026 Lunar New Year, the Year of the Horse. The Tomatin Year of the Horse 2026 is a 2011 vintage matured in a first-fill Pedro Ximénez sherry butt, bottled at 56.5% ABV and priced at £95 (~$128).
The release comprises just 817 individually numbered bottles available through specialist retailers globally.
The whisky was aged in a ‘bota gorda’ – a larger sherry butt sourced directly from a bodega in Jerez, Spain. The cask’s previous use in a sherry solera system has imparted intense PX characteristics to the spirit.

READ THE STORY“We don’t often release single cask whiskies to the global market, however this sweet, fruity and structured Tomatin single malt seemed the perfect way to toast the Lunar New Year,” said Jamie Muir, distillery manager at Tomatin.
The expression is non-chill filtered and natural in color, presented in Tomatin’s signature bottle with red labeling symbolizing good fortune and energy.
Muir highlighted the connection between Jerez and horses, noting the Spanish city’s famous Carthusian breed dating to the 15th century.
“This rich heritage makes this whisky a fitting tribute to the strength, elegance and spirit of the Year of the Horse,” Muir added.
Official tasting notes from the brand describe orange zest, dried cranberries, honeycomb and candyfloss on the nose. The palate delivers candied almonds, toffee apples, sultanas and salted liquorice, with a long, round finish featuring lingering baking spice.
Tomatin’s cooperage is one of few remaining at Scottish distilleries, with more than half the workforce residing on-site with their families.
The distillery has operated continuously since 1897, though its heritage traces back to the 15th century. This latest release aligns with Tomatin’s ‘To What Matters’ philosophy, emphasizing connections and shared traditions that mirror Lunar New Year celebrations.
The Year of the Horse symbolizes strength, vitality and adventure in Chinese zodiac tradition, making it particularly significant for collectors and whisky enthusiasts across Asian markets.
Whisky lovers in the UK can find the special release at retailers such as The Whisky Exchange, Royal Mile Whiskies, and Hard To Find Whisky.
Tomatin Year of the Horse 2026 is also available through selected retailers in the following countries: Netherlands, Ukraine, Romania, Germany, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Philippines, Italy, Singapore, and Malaysia.
