The Borders Distillery has unveiled the fourth and final expression in its blended whisky Workshop Series with the launch of ‘Deep Time’. The limited-edition bottling is inspired by the pioneering Scottish geologist and farmer James Hutton, marking 300 years since his birth.

Deep Time pays tribute to James Hutton, one of Scotland’s most notable scholars. Hutton is widely regarded as the father of modern geology, and his work on the age of the Earth reshaped scientific understanding in the 18th century.
From the soils he cultivated as a farmer to the rocks he studied as a scientist, Hutton recognized the powerful relationship between land, water, and time. Those principles continue to shape whisky making today.
The release uses the same batch of spirit first distilled for the distillery’s 2019 Workshop Series release.

Deep Time demonstrates the influence of maturation and how the spirit has evolved over time. According to the official notes from the brand, the whisky offers notes of apple tart and peach, leading to a long, elegant finish “made to be savoured.”
Giancarlo Bianchi, managing director, said: “Deep Time is a fitting conclusion to our Workshop Series. As we close this chapter, we’re also celebrating how these experimental releases have helped lay the foundations for our single malt, giving us invaluable insight into the character and potential of our spirit.”
Deep Time is bottled at 40% ABV. Only 750 bottles are available. The whisky will be sold at The Borders Distillery and selected specialist retailers.
The Borders Distillery opened in 2018 in Hawick, becoming the first single malt Scotch whisky distillery in the Scottish Borders in almost 200 years.
