Scapegrace Black: Colour-Changing Gin RTD Launches in NZ

Scapegrace Distilling Co. has released a ready-to-drink version of Scapegrace Black, the world’s first naturally black gin. The Scapegrace Black Gin & Tonic RTD is available nationwide in New Zealand’s first colour-changing can.

Scapegrace Black launched in 2018 and quickly went viral for its black shade, which changes to pink, blue and purple depending on the mixers added.

The expression has remained New Zealand’s number-one selling gin for eight years.

“Scapegrace Black has always done things nobody has seen before,” said Scapegrace co-founder Mark Neal.

“When we launched Scapegrace Black, the response was beyond anything we imagined, it sold out in a week and took on a life of its own. That same spirit is what’s gone into this can.”

According to Neal, the can has been created using UV-reactive ink. It will subtly change color when exposed to sunlight.

“A special gin needs a special can and we’re proud that Scapegrace Black will get to continue its colour changing tradition,” Neal said.

He added: “We know there’s huge pent up demand for this product. Scapegrace Black is our most loved expression, it has built a cult following and we’re looking forward to seeing consumers enjoy our viral gin in a RTD format.”

Scapegrace Black is made from a blend of botanicals. These include aronia berry, saffron, pineapple, butterfly pea flower and sweet potato, which work together to create the naturally black brew.

According to the official notes from the brand, the gin is full-bodied on the palate. It has a candied sweet potato and pineapple finish, with a velvety mouthfeel.

The RTD is bottled at 5% ABV. It is available in a 330ml, 10-pack format with a recommended retail price of $29.99 (£13 / ₹2,235).

Buyers who purchase a pack during the launch window will be entered into a draw to win a trip to the Scapegrace Distillery in Central Otago.

Scapegrace is based in Central Otago on New Zealand’s South Island. The distillery produces a range of gins and whiskies, and has expanded its international footprint across markets including the UK, the US and Asia in recent years.
