Tales of the Cocktail Foundation (TOTCF) has partnered with Scotch whisky brand Monkey Shoulder to present the 2026 Ultimate Bartender Championship (UBC), with the first heat kicking off in Chicago on February 24. The skills-based competition will run across multiple US cities as part of TOTCF’s Tales on Tour series, culminating in an international grand final in December.
UBC challenges bartenders across five disciplines: general spirits knowledge, professional service, speed, precision, and sensory expertise.
The competition features six individual challenges designed to test a wide range of behind-the-bar abilities.
Among them is the perfect serve, which asks competitors to create cocktails under time pressure. A head-to-head round-building challenge pits bartenders directly against one another on the clock.
According to The Spirits Business, additional challenges include a general knowledge quiz, accuracy of pouring, blind nosing, and tray service.
The online quiz serves as the application and qualification for the competition. Complimentary tickets to Tales on Tour events will be provided to bartenders who best the quiz.
Qualified competitors will then participate in live rounds during Tales on Tour stops, completing the remaining challenges in 20-minute time slots.
The top-scoring bartender, according to the scoreboard, will advance to the international grand final.
The 2025 schedule includes stops in Chicago (February 24), Dallas (March 24), Los Angeles (April 14), Washington DC (September 22), and Miami (October 27), ahead of a global championship trip in December.
Monkey Shoulder is a blended malt Scotch whisky owned by William Grant & Sons. The brand has built a strong reputation within the bartending community through cocktail-focused positioning and industry partnerships.
Tales of the Cocktail is one of the spirits industry’s most prominent annual gatherings, with its flagship festival held each July in New Orleans. The Tales on Tour program extends the foundation’s educational and community mission to cities across the country year-round.
The UBC format reflects a broader trend among spirits brands investing in bartender engagement programs that combine competition with professional development opportunities.
