MGP Chapter One Bourbon: Distiller Steps Out of Shadows

MGP Ingredients has launched a new branded spirit under its own MGP name for the first time, led by inaugural release MGP Chapter One: Out of the Shadows. The 111-proof, 10-year-old straight bourbon whiskey will be available in limited quantities across the US this fall for a suggested retail price of $69.99 (£52, ₹6,698) per 750ml bottle.

The launch coincides with the return of the MGP Distillery name to the company’s historic Lawrenceburg, Indiana operation.

MGP is one of the largest American whiskey producers and has crafted spirits for hundreds of acclaimed brands. The distiller has long operated behind the scenes, supplying whiskey that other brands bottle under their own names.

READ THE STORY

“The MGP name has built incredible equity over generations because of the quality of the products we make and the people behind them,” said Julie Francis, president and CEO of MGP Ingredients.

“We’ve been making whiskey and spirits that others have proudly put their names on for decades. Bringing the MGP name back to the distillery and launching MGP Chapter One: Out of the Shadows is an exciting opportunity to share that story directly with consumers.”

Master distiller Ian Stirsman selectively blended barrels of the historic LBSV mash, made from 60% corn, 36% rye and 4% malted barley. The whiskey aged for a full decade in Rickhouse G, described as one of the distillery’s most celebrated warehouses.

According to the official notes from the brand, the whiskey offers butterscotch, burnt sugar, molasses and cherry on the nose. The palate reveals cherry cola, raspberries, chocolate, sassafras and leather, with a lingering finish of cherry cola and sassafras.

“For MGP Chapter One: Out of the Shadows, we went into some of our exceptional barrels and made a whiskey that really represents what makes our distillery unique,” said Stirsman.

“It’s exciting to finally share a bottle under the MGP name and give enthusiasts a taste of the craftsmanship that has been part of our distillery for generations.”

MGP Ingredients (Nasdaq: MGPI) has operated since 1941. Its Branded Spirits portfolio, under the Luxco umbrella, includes Penelope, Rebel, Remus and Yellowstone bourbons, plus El Mayor tequila.

Further MGP expressions are expected to follow.
