Isle of Skye Whisky has launched Magma Stone Toasted, a limited-edition blended Scotch finished using a volcanic magma stone toasting technique. The expression is bottled at 46% ABV, carries a suggested retail price of $47, and will be available for a limited time at Total Wine & More stores across the US.

The release draws on the volcanic origins of the Isle of Skye, where ancient volcanic activity shaped the island’s mountains and rock formations over millions of years. Magma stone is a volcanic rock formed as molten rock cools and solidifies, offering a direct link to Skye’s dramatic landscape.

That geological heritage informs the whisky’s cask finishing. Rather than relying on conventional direct-fire toasting, heated volcanic stone radiates heat evenly inside the cask, activating the oak more slowly and gently.

The controlled process seasons the casks to create a smoother, richer whisky with a velvety texture and layers of flavor.

According to the brand, the technique builds on Isle of Skye’s signature balance of fruit and smoke.

“Magma Stone Toasted gave us an opportunity to do something we have never done before with Isle of Skye, while still staying true to the character of the whisky,” said John Glass, master blender for Isle of Skye. “Using heated volcanic stone to toast the casks allows the oak to develop more gently, creating exceptional silkiness, depth and layers of flavor while drawing a direct line back to the landscape of Skye.”

At 46% ABV, the expression is the highest-ABV release in the Isle of Skye range, adding flavor intensity while preserving the smoothness central to the whisky.

The official notes from the brand describe dark fruit sweetness and toasted oak, giving way to chocolate orange, sandalwood and rich peat, before a long finish of vanilla, peat and oak.

The launch continues a period of exploration for Isle of Skye, following expressions such as Double Smoke, Cigar Reserve and Rum Cask Finish.

The brand positions Magma Stone Toasted as both a distinctive drinking experience and a collectible release, citing its limited availability and connection to Skye’s volcanic history.

Isle of Skye Whisky is owned by Edinburgh-based Ian Macleod Distillers, whose portfolio also includes Glengoyne, Tamdhu and Rosebank single malts.
