Islay’s northernmost distillery returns with its highly anticipated annual release after a one-year hiatus, featuring a new flavor profile that emphasizes coastal character over intense sherry notes.
Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Cask Strength Returns with Refined Profile
Bunnahabhain has unveiled its 2025 edition of the 12 Year Old Cask Strength whisky. The new expression arrives after skipping 2024, responding to consumer demand for the distillery’s unfiltered, full-strength offerings.
The whisky is bottled at 56.4% ABV.
Master Blender Julieann Fernandez selected predominantly second-fill Oloroso sherry casks for this edition, creating a more structured and coastal profile compared to earlier versions. The whisky showcases less overt sweetness and darker fruit notes than its predecessors, instead highlighting the distillery’s maritime character.
“This whisky is everything that the distillery is known for: unpeated, sherried, and full of intense flavor,” said Fernandez. “One of the greatest joys for me as a Master Blender is tasting a whisky in its purest form directly from cask and it brings me real pleasure to be able to share that experience with our community of whisky lovers. Not every whisky stands up to Cask Strength, but Bunnahabhain is absolutely made for it.”
Bunnahabhain Emphasizes Pure Expression with Natural Presentation
The Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Cask Strength 2025 edition is non-chill filtered and contains no added coloring, allowing drinkers to experience the whisky as it comes from the cask.
According to official tasting notes, the whisky presents a deep gold color with aromas of golden raisins, apricots, toasted nuts, and light floral notes. The palate delivers malty sweetness, soft oak, dried fruit, sultanas, hazelnuts, and gentle spice. The finish features oak spice, light tobacco, sea salt, and cocoa powder.
Matured in the distillery’s coastal warehouses on Islay’s northeastern shore, the whisky benefits from the maritime environment that defines Bunnahabhain’s character. The distillery has produced whisky at this location since 1881, using spring water from the Margadale river in its production process.
The limited edition release aims to recreate the experience of tasting whisky directly from the cask at the distillery for those unable to visit Islay. Previous editions have established a following among whisky enthusiasts seeking full-strength expressions of Bunnahabhain’s signature style.
The Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Cask Strength 2025 Edition is priced at £90 (~$120) and will be available globally through the distillery’s website and selected specialist retailers starting today, September 1st, 2025. The release continues the distillery’s tradition of offering annual cask strength expressions that showcase different aspects of its whisky-making approach.
