Borders Distillery Names David King as Strategic Advisor

The Borders Distillery (TBD) has named industry veteran David King as its senior strategic advisor. The appointment comes as the Hawick-based producer prepares to launch its single malt Scotch whisky brand in September 2026, marking the first such release from the Scottish Borders since 1837.

King joins after eight years of the distillery maturing its whisky stocks. His arrival further strengthens a team that was bolstered earlier this year with the appointment of Giancarlo Bianchi as managing director.

King brings more than 30 years of experience across the premium whisky industry. He has previously held roles at Edrington, Berry Bros. & Rudd, Anchor Brewers & Distillers and Gordon & MacPhail.

In his new position, King will support the launch, rollout and subsequent growth of TBD’s single malt portfolio across both international and domestic markets.

“We are about to embark on the launch of our first single malt scotch whisky, a first from the Scottish Borders since 1837,” said Bianchi.

He added: “This uniqueness of origin, combined with the high quality and approachable style of the spirit and an all important accessible price position make it appealing to both new and seasoned consumers.”

Bianchi also praised the new appointment. “The company is fortunate to be able to tap into David’s extensive experience in the premium whisky industry which spans over 30 years in global markets,” he said.

King said the distillery stood apart from its peers. “The Borders Distillery is a rare beast among the new distilleries that have sprung up over the last 20 years or so,” he commented.

“It has the setup and ambition of a global brand even before a bottle of its single malt whisky has been sold and that is what interested me most about the project,” King added.

He continued: “It is exciting and a privilege to join a single malt Scotch whisky brand from its inception and I am confident we can achieve our bold ambitions.”

The Borders Distillery opened in 2018, becoming the first single malt Scotch whisky distillery to operate in the Scottish Borders region in nearly two centuries. The company already produces gin and vodka under its portfolio.
