Aberfeldy Single Malt Scotch Whisky has expanded its wine cask finishing series with the release of a 15-year-old expression aged in Bolgheri red wine casks. The limited-edition bottling, developed by Malt Master Stephanie Macleod, officially launched on October 23.

The new single malt first matured for 15 years in a combination of refill and hogshead casks.

Following this initial aging, the whisky underwent a two-year finishing process in casks sourced from the Bolgheri region of Tuscany, Italy.

READ THE STORY

This release is the latest installment in the distillery’s ongoing exploration of wine cask maturation. The series aims to use different cask types to complement and elevate the signature honeyed character of the Aberfeldy single malt, rather than mask it.

Previous expressions in the limited-edition range have featured finishes in casks from prominent wine regions, including Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, French Pomerol, and Bordeaux.

The Bolgheri region is a prestigious Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) on the Tuscan coast. It is famous for producing ‘Super Tuscan’ wines, which often utilize Bordeaux grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

These casks are known for imparting rich, dark fruit and spice characteristics. Macleod carefully monitored the maturation and flavor development in each cask until the desired profile was achieved.

According to official notes from the brand, the resulting whisky has rich aromas of dark cherries and juicy plums.

The palate is described as having notes of dark chocolate laced with vanilla and delicate nutmeg, supported by the distillery’s characteristic honeyed sweetness.

Its finish is said to be smooth and warming with a lingering touch of soft oak.

Stephanie Macleod has served as Master Blender for Dewar’s (John Dewar & Sons) since 2006. She also oversees the single malt portfolio (Aberfeldy, Aultmore, Craigellachie, Royal Brackla, The Deveron) as Malt Master. She is highly regarded in the whisky industry and was named “Master Blender of the Year” by the International Whisky Competition for six consecutive years.

Aberfeldy 15 Year Old Bolgheri Red Wine Cask Finish is bottled at 46% ABV. It is non-chill-filtered with natural color and has a recommended retail price of US$84.99.
