Tasting Notes

About:

103 Proof, 51.5% ABV, Aged minimum 4 years, 750ml, Limited availability 107 Proof, 53.5% ABV, Single Barrel, Aged minimum 4 years, 750ml, Available only in MI 83 Proof, 41.5% ABV, Small Batch, Aged minimum 4 years, $45
Appearance:
Dark, burnt caramel with a golden hue, similar to maple syrup Very, very similar to the Single Barrel, but with a honeyed cast to it. Muddied amber of a smoggy or smoky sunset.
Nose:
Musky sweetness richens into golden brown sugar. Again similar to the Single Barrel, but richer. The first hints of the smoke to come whisper out of the glass. Freshly baked bread right away becomes brightly fruity, reminiscent of juicy red grapefruit, just a touch of sour.
Palate:
Not terribly complex, more lightly sweet than the nose would have led you to believe. Traditional bourbon flavor of oaky vanilla flows from beginning to end, only distinguished by the heat of the whiskey. Water softens some of the bite of the high proof, but does reduce some flavor. Score: 2.5/5 Tasting Notes: Luca Mariano Signature Bourbon Vital Stats: 107 Proof, 53.5% ABV, Single Barrel, Aged minimum 4 years, 750ml, Available only in MI Appearance: Very, very similar to the Single Barrel, but with a honeyed cast to it. Nose: Again similar to the Single Barrel, but richer. The first hints of the smoke to come whisper out of the glass. Palate: Soft, creamy texture throughout. Sweet all the way through, smoke comes in gradually, with the fruitiness of the cherry wood. Score: 3.5/5 Tasting Notes: Luca Mariano Old Americana Bourbon Vital Stats: 83 Proof, 41.5% ABV, Small Batch, Aged minimum 4 years, $45 Appearance: Muddied amber of a smoggy or smoky sunset. Nose: Freshly baked bread right away becomes brightly fruity, reminiscent of juicy red grapefruit, just a touch of sour. Palate: Shockingly strong grassy rye pop up front, but mellows quickly into cereal grains, and only leads into sweetness at the back palate. The finish is quick and comfortably warm with a touch of spice and oak. Score: 2.5/5 Final Thoughts: None of these bourbons were terribly complex or flavorful. The smoked element of the Signature Single Barrel is unique, certainly, and was executed well. I felt like the wood smoke aspect went well with the nature of bourbon, and was a creative approach. That creativity could mean some interesting things to come out of this distillery in the future.
