Scotland’s Lochlea Releases Second Season Harvest Edition

Scotland’s Lochlea Distillery has released its next Harvest Edition, one of their small batch single malt whiskies that celebrate the maker’s different casks used for maturation.

Lochlea Production Director John Campbell, in a prepared statement, explained that this new release, the Harvest Edition Second Crop, was matured in a combination of tawny and ruby Port casks, STR barriques and first-fill bourbon barrels to offer a different take on the Lochlea house style.

Campbell said that as a working farm, these expressions tie in to reflect the farming calendar at Lochlea.

“For this year’s Harvest Edition Second Crop, we have incorporated a much higher proportion of Port casks,” Campbell said, “As the spirit is another year older and we felt that it could stand up to the richness and intensity these casks add. This has really helped to enhance the whisky’s creaminess, whilst also introducing a delightful peppery, floral spice that the spirit gets from the STR barriques.”

He noted that this release was particularly inspired by the end of summer, when their golden barley is harvested and eventually used for the next year’s production.

Lochlea’s seasonal releases include: the Harvest Edition, inspired by the annual harvest on the farm; the Fallow Edition, which reflects the season of autumn on the farm when the fields are left fallow to rest after a busy harvest; the Ploughing Edition, released in winter when the fields are plowed in preparation for spring; and the Sowing Edition, inspired by spring when the seed is sown for the year’s barley crop.

The Harvest Edition Second Crop tasting notes show that on the nose, it features aromas of dates, red grapes, and marmalade. On the palate, it tastes of pink peppercorns and dried fruit. It has a lingering, creamy finish.

Lochlea’s Harvest Edition Second Crop comes non-chill filtered and clocks in at 46% ABV. It has a suggested retail price of £51.60. It’s now available for purchase.
