Old Pulteney’s New Whisky Collection Inspired By World’s Coasts

Old Pulteney is releasing its new range of whiskies, The Coastal Series, here in the United States.

A statement from the vaunted Scotch brand notes that this collection offers four limited-edition expressions, the result of Old Pulteney’s collaborations with spirit producers from coastal locations across the world.

These four new offerings come from hand-selected coastal casks, bringing more to the “coastal flavors” of Old Pulteney’s maritime malt.

And for the first time, Old Pulteney matured its whisky in ex-Pineau des Charentes wine casks, which incorporate a flavor of the French coastline from the unique sweet aperitif.

The distiller’s notes show that the aperitif, which originates from the Charente-Maritime region on France’s southwest coast, intertwines with the northern flavors of Old Pulteney’s single malt. The result is the inaugural expression in The Coastal Series, Old Pulteney Pineau des Charentes.

The whisky for this expression started its maturation in ex-bourbon casks before further aging in the hand-selected ex-Pineau des Charentes French oak casks. They were chosen by Stuart Harvey, master blender.

Harvey noted that this expression evokes the warmth of sunny coastal days with sweet and light notes of candied oranges, warm spices, and creamy vanilla. It features a lingering finish of caramelized hazelnuts and ground spices.

“Old Pulteney’s past, present, and taste are influenced by its home by the sea on the Caithness Coast, and The Coastal Series beautifully explores cask maturations that highlight wonderful expressions influenced by their global coastal homes,” said Malcolm Waring, Old Pulteney’s distillery manager.

This expression comes in a gold gift box that mirrors the hue of golden sands, and features a detailed illustration of the French coastline.

Old Pulteney Pineau des Charentes clocks in at 46% ABV and has a suggested retail price of $79.99. It will be available later this summer in markets across the U.S.
