Lagg Distillery, located on the Scottish Isle of Arran, has released the second edition in their core range of single malts, the Lagg Single Malt Corriecravie Edition.
A statement from the distiller noted that the Corriecravie Edition is matured initially in bourbon barrels before being finished in Oloroso Sherry hogsheads that came directly from producer Miguel Martin in Jerez, Spain. They matured about six months, then the spirit was bottled at 55% ABV, without chill filtration and no added coloring.
The distiller’s notes show that the taste profile is slightly richer than their flagship Kilmory expression, and it features notes of sweeter spices and rich fruits. The Corriecravie Edition is a much more limited run as compared to the Kilmory Edition.
The Lagg Corriecravie Edition uses Concerto malted barley and water from the distillery’s own borehole. Their malt is peated to 50 parts per million in the kiln. The distiller crushes and agitates it in their mash tun to create a cloudy wort, which they say delivers a more oily, robust flavor.
Lagg’s chosen yeast and fermentation time helps bring a full-bodied flavor to the distillation. It’s then distilled twice, quickly, in their copper pot stills.
Lagg Distillery Manager Graham Omand said that “LAGG single malts represent the spirit and respect for our land that the people here can’t wait to share with the wider world.”
Corriecravie, of which the whisky edition is named, is a small village just northwest of Lagg, with views of the island’s southern coastline.
Lagg Distillery, opened in 2019 and associated with the Isle of Arran distillery, offers tastings, tours and dining options for whisky enthusiasts, along with a gift shop with the new Lagg single malts and a range of their whiskies.
