Have you ever wanted to work at a remote Scottish distillery, going hands on to take part in the crafting of fine Scotch whisky? Highland Park, among the most northerly of all spirits makers in Scotland, has unveiled a spendy option which will let you do something along those lines as part of a new tour choice for 2015.

Here’s how Highland Park spells out what’s called the “Work A Day At The Distillery” tour:

The tour will be no easy ride, new recruits will report for duty at 8am for a briefing with the distillery manager.  After a morning of firing up the kilns and working the floor maltings, workers will be treated to a traditional Orcadian lunch.  In the afternoon, a trip to the Hobbister Moore to get a bit of Orkney peat under the fingernails followed by a visit to the key landmarks of the island and for recruits to see for themselves the force and impact the weather has on the Highland Park production process.

As evening falls the workers will no doubt be exhausted, so will be invited to relax in front of an open fire in the private Eunson Room and treated to a grand dinner and tutored tasting.  As a reward for their hard work, recruits will be presented with an embroidered Highland Park boiler suit, waterproof jacket and a hand filled bottle.

Sounds fun, huh? There are a couple of caveats you should know before you sign up, of course. One is the price, which clocks in at a rather eye popping £1,000 (around $1,550 USD) per person! The tour is also limited to just two people at a time, so if you are thinking of this as a small group type experience you may be out of luck.

I personally think the part of firing up the kilns is pretty cool – you can learn more about how Highland Park’s kilns work via the video below.

Besides this tour, one other special option is being made available in addition to the usual choices. Known as the Vintage tour, you get a behind the scenes look at distillery operations and the chance to taste three rare Highland Park expressions.
