Sailor’s Home Releases New Irish Whiskey Range Shaped By The World

An Irish whiskey brand from Limerick called Sailor’s Home recently launched its first range of three expressions in the U.K. — The Haven, The Journey and The Horizon.  These unique expressions were created by whiskey maker Dr. Jack Ó’Sé. The brand is said to pride itself on its adventurous approach to blending, aging and finishing its products.

The whiskeys themselves are said to be inspired by the Atlantic Way on the western coast of Ireland.  Ó’Sé, as part of his inspiration, has over 40 years of experience blending Irish whiskey and noted he is aiming to break the boundaries of traditional whisky-making.

Of the three initial offerings, Journey Irish Whiskey is aged in virgin American oak, then recasked in American bourbon barrels. It is blended with malt Irish whiskey that has been matured in American bourbon and finished in Jamaican rum casks. The whiskey has an ABV of 43% and is sold at a recommended retail price of £41.95.

Official tasting notes for it are as follows:

  • Nose: butterscotch, toasted oak, dark rum notes
  • Taste: sticky toffee, rum roundness, malt depth
  • Finish: ripe banana, molasses & vanilla

The new Haven Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey, meanwhile, is Sailor’s Home first release of the single pot still whiskey style. It was created with both mated and unmalted Irish barley and oats that were triple pot distilled. Initially matured in American bourbon barrels and Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, it has an ABV of 43% and is sold at a suggested retail price of £52.95.

Official tasting notes:

  • Nose: green grapes, warm spices and honeyed oak
  • Taste: creamy mouthfeel, pot spices, roasted almonds, vanilla notes
  • Finish: brown sugar, ripe black fruits

The Horizon 10-year-old Irish whiskey rounds out the new offerings and is crafted from Irish malt and grain whiskeys that have matured for at least 10 years in American bourbon barrels. It’s then filled into Barbados rum casks for 6  months to finish. The whiskey has an ABV of 43% and is sold at the suggested retail price of £58.95.

Official tasting notes:

  • Nose: brown sugar, ripe tropical fruits
  • Taste: malted honey, oak depth, silk rum, vanilla, caramelized banana
  • Finish: buttery toffee, orange zest.

“We’ve created a range of three truly distinctive whiskeys made in Ireland but shaped by the world. It’s been amazing to work with these liquids, being adventurous with flavors is what Sailor’s Home is all about,” Ó’Sé said in a prepared statement. “We look to explore and go beyond so that a new generation of Irish whiskey drinkers can join us along this journey of discovery.”
