Woodford Reserve’s Double Double Oaked Bourbon Returns Once Again

Woodford Reserve, the Kentucky distillery that has been producing bourbon for over 200 years, has announced the re-release of its Double Double Oaked Bourbon expression.

This 2020 edition of their Double Double Oaked Bourbon is part of master distiller Chris Morris’ ongoing Distillery Series, an occasional drop of limited edition bottles that has, in the past, included 2017’s Pinot Noir Finished Rye and last year’s Five Wood.

The creation of this expression, which has been released in years past, is fairly straightforward: the distillers finish their fully mature Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Bourbon for an additional year in a second new oak barrel that has been heavily toasted and lightly charred. According to Morris, in a prepared statement, that additional year “creates a bourbon that is distinctly spicier than its original counterpart, known for its sweeter taste and finish.” Official tasting notes for this expression are below.

The rub is that Double Double Oaked Bourbon will only be available to consumers in Woodford Reserve’s home state. The distillery is releasing a limited number of bottles to retailers in Kentucky for around $50 per 750 ml bottle. It had also offered in person sales at their gift shop in Versailles, Kentucky on January 27, but recent comments on social media indicated that stock sold out quite quickly.

Color: Roasted coffee bean

Aroma: A robust medley of rich maple syrup, dark butterscotch, brittle caramel, bittersweet chocolate, burnt marshmallow and sweet hickory smoke notes dominate the nose.

Taste: Rich dried cherry and cranberry fruit swim in a blackberry jam brightened with hints of ripe apple. Chai tea and warming clove notes develop to spice up the palate.

Finish: Warm and drying with a lingering clove character.
