Latest Woodford Reserve Distillery Series A Five Wood Offering

The Woodford Reserve Distillery Series, as we’ve explored in the past, is a chance for this Kentucky bourbon stalwart to experiment with offerings more typically seen from the likes of craft whiskey distilleries. The newest of this limited edition line up has now been announced, taking the form of a whiskey that’s been aged in five different styles of barrels.

The new Woodford Reserve Distillery Series Five Wood, according to those behind it, begins as a standard bourbon aged in a standard oak barrel. Then, that same liquid was finished in four other barrels — Oloroso Sherry barrel, Amontillado Sherry barrel, Ruby Port barrel, and Tawny Port barrel. All of these together are said to create “a unique profile that bursts with rich fruit flavors.”

“This is the first time in Woodford Reserve’s history that we’ve blended whiskeys that have been finished in five different barrels,” said Woodford Reserve Master Distiller Chris Morris in a prepared statement. “The result is a rich taste and a bright finish.”

As it stands now plans call for this bourbon, bottled at 45.2% ABV (90.4 proof), to be available through the distillery starting this week for around $50 per 375 ml bottle. It will also be available at select Kentucky retailers. You’ll find some official tasting notes below for your consideration.

For the curious, it was noted by the brand that “there are three annual releases of the distillery series.”

  • Color: Deep Black Cherrywood
  • Aroma: An intense medley of rich blackberry, dark cherry, dates, raisin, prune and red fruit reduction notes sweetened with Damara sugar and caramel-coated walnuts. Dark leather, oak and black licorice spice develop slowly.
  • Taste: Rich dark chocolate and espresso coffee caramel icing coated with a raspberry and cherry reduction.
  • Finish: Long, mouthwatering rich red fruit brightened with a drop of orange oil
