Nearest Green Distillery Expands, Now Among Largest Black Landowners In Tennessee

Tennessee whiskey maker Uncle Nearest recently announced that its distillery home has expanded by 432 acres with the purchase of an adjacent property.

A statement from the distiller noted that combined with its original 313-acre distillery property in the hills above Lynchburg, Tennessee, the distillery has increased its footprint to a total of 745 acres in Bedford and Moore Counties.

Fawn Weaver, CEO and founder of Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey, explained that this acquisition makes Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey one of the largest, if not the largest, black landowners in Tennessee.

Nearest Green Distillery, which opened to the public in 2019 with 270 acres, attracts as many as 8,000 visitors a weekend. And with the expansion, Weaver said, the brand expects that number to swell to 10,000 to 15,000 visitors on summer weekends.

“We are always thinking ahead and doing our best to keep pace with our continuously increasing demand,” Weaver added.

Nearest Green Distillery is home to Humble Baron, which now holds the Guinness World Record for the longest bar, clocking in at 518 feet with a 17-station bar. There’s also a barbecue joint.

Victoria Eady Butler, master blender and fifth-generation descendant of Nearest Green, said that when a member of the press dubbed them “Malt Disney World” upon opening in 2019, “we took that quite seriously and built out a distillery worthy of that moniker.”
