Colorado’s Boulder Spirits is releasing The 10 Essentials, the distillery’s 2023 limited-edition American single malt.
The 10 Essentials, noted as being complex and spice-driven, is Boulder Spirits’ second limited-edition single malt release, and it follows on the heels of 2022’s The Trailhead, which garnered a double gold medal at the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
Distillery officials explained that The 10 Essentials is a blend of five different casks, including five-year ex-armagnac, ex-tawny Port, and ex-PX Sherry casks with two casks of straight single malt in new American oak.
The final product is a whiskey aged between five and six and a half years.
“We’re excited about this whiskey and to be creating innovative, complex single malts using different casks to get a myriad of flavors,” said Boulder Spirits Co-founder Alastair Brogan.
Continuing with the same outdoors theme of The Trailhead, Brogan said The 10 Essentials refers to the basic necessities needed to survive in the outdoors: navigation, light, shelter, food, fire, a knife, first aid, sun protection, proper clothing, and of course, water.
Boulder Spirits’ water source, nearby Eldorado Springs artesian water, is an essential ingredient of their whiskey, he noted.
The five casks used in The 10 Essentials were allowed to meld for eight weeks, the whiskey then proofed to 49.5% ABV with the Eldorado Springs water.

In all, Boulder Spirits is releasing 1,800 bottles of The 10 Essentials, with a suggested retail price of $64.99.
