Tasting Notes

About:

Westland Distillery has built its reputation by doing things differently, focusing heavily on grain selection, roasting profiles and active oak to shape a style that feels distinctly American rather than a reflection of Scotch. The Whisky Trail bottling leans into that approach, delivering a whisky with real weight and presence while still keeping enough balance to stay engaging from start to finish.
Appearance:
Deep gold moving towards amber, with a richness in colour that reflects the cask influence. It shows good viscosity in the glass, forming slow, thick legs that suggest a fuller texture.
Nose:
Roasted malt comes through immediately, backed up by dark chocolate and coffee bean, giving the whisky a deeper, more savoury profile than many others in the series. As it opens, dried fruit and caramel begin to show, while the oak sits firmly in place, assertive but controlled rather than overpowering.
Palate:
The texture is full and slightly oily, giving the whisky a sense of weight as it moves across the palate. Dark malt leads into cocoa, roasted nuts and burnt sugar, with a subtle savoury edge that adds depth and keeps things from becoming overly sweet. The oak brings structure and grip, shaping the whisky without taking over.
Finish:
Medium to long, carrying dark chocolate and oak spice, with a lingering roasted note that holds on before fading gradually with warmth.
Comments:
This is a whisky that knows exactly what it is trying to be, leaning into bold flavours and a strong sense of identity rather than chasing elegance. It will suit drinkers who enjoy richer, darker styles with texture and presence, and it stands as a clear example of how American single malt is carving out its own space.
