Tasting Notes

About:

A limited-edition 12-Year-Old single malt whisky expression from The Macallan, the 110 Proof Edition offers a bolder and richer experience than the classic Macallan 12-Year-Old Sherry Oak (bottled at 40% ABV). Matured in predominantly European sherry oak casks, with just a hint of influence from American sherry seasoned oak, The Macallan 110 Proof Edition is bottled at 55% ABV.
Appearance:
Rich Amber
Nose:
Aromas of sherried dates and figs, jammy cherries and raspberries accompanied by a hint of sweet strawberry laces. There are also notes of cinnamon spice and orange peel citrus.
Palate:
Opens with an oaky note, quickly followed by rich Oloroso sherry on the palate. Thick and richly mouthcoating with notes of stewed sultanas and raisins accompanied by stem ginger and cinnamon. Dark chocolate and treacle toffee follow.
Finish:
Medium-long, a slightly drying finish with notes of peppery oak, mocha and cinnamon.
Comments:
With the release of The Macallan 12-Year-Old 110 Proof Edition the distillery seems to have answered the hopes of many whisky enthusiasts, and released an officially bottled higher proof single malt. I’ll admit I was initially sceptical as recent modern Macallan releases have felt thin and overpriced expressions, seemingly more reliant on brand hype. But my experience of The Macallan 110 Proof Edition was a pleasant surprise with a rich sherry character, with clear notes of stewed fruits, spices, chocolate and treacle toffee. This is a thick full-bodied whisky – the decadent sherried Macallan bottling that many whisky enthusiasts have hoped for.

Compared with The Macallan 12-Year-Old Double Oak or Sherry Oak Editions, the 110 Proof Edition offers a quality higher proof experience. The price point feels right when compared against the core range 12-Year-Old bottling prices, and given the brand is Macallan. This is going to appeal to a wide range of whisky drinkers, truly a Macallan worthy of the name!
