About:

Remus Bourbon has unveiled Remus Lou Gehrig Reserve, an ultra-limited bourbon honoring the iconic New York Yankees first baseman, produced at MGP’s Ross & Squibb Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. The 109-proof release follows the brand’s Babe Ruth Reserve expressions in 2024 and 2025, continuing a series that pairs American whiskey with baseball history.

Only 9,665 bottles will be released nationwide, with each bottle representing one of Gehrig’s career plate appearances. The bourbon carries a suggested retail price of $129.99 per 750ml bottle.

Master Distiller Ian Stirsman crafted the expression using four distinct mash bills in tribute to Gehrig’s legendary No. 4 jersey. The 109 proof honors the 100th anniversary of his 109 RBI season in 1926, the first of 13 consecutive seasons with 100 or more RBIs. “In the 1920s, only one man was worthy of following Babe Ruth in the lineup, and that was the great Lou Gehrig. In 2026, the same holds true,” said Stirsman. “Every detail was thoughtfully created to celebrate his legacy in a meaningful way, while maintaining the craftsmanship of Remus Bourbon that drinkers love and expect from our distillery.”

A QR code on each bottle’s back label allows consumers to discover what Gehrig did during the specific plate appearance their bottle commemorates.

Appearance:
Clear copper color with thick fast legs down the glass which didn’t linger much. Tasted neat in a Glencairn glass.
Nose:
Sweet grasses, meadow flowers, fruits of melon and red berries. Very sweet and approachable with an almost apple juice profile about the midsmell. There is an undernote of alcohol throughout.
Palate:
Cigar wrapper, oak, and melted caramels. Vanilla with nice flowers. A nice spice undertone to compliment the velvety malted grains. Subtle nuttiness with a touch of black pepper.
Finish:
Oily mouthfeel with good oak sugars and a pleasent undertone of rye.
Comments:
This is a classic dram of bourbon and is quite nice. I think the flavors are fun and with the various mashbills used to compile the whiske you can stretch your palate to find different component pieces. What I enjoyed mostly was the deeper notes of some of the high wheat mashes used. If you’re a baseball fan I think this is a fun tribute bottle. I found it sweet while maintining good earth notes and an oak profile I wasn’t expecting.

Overall maybe buy a dram or find a buddy to split a bottle. The bottle design is different and will look quite cool on a shelf, but overall the whiskey inside is approachable without being overly sophisticated.
