Tasting Notes

About:

A 2024 limited-edition bottling from Islay’s Kilchoman distillery, this expression was aged for the full term of its maturation in ruby port hogsheads. Two contrasting ages were combined for balance, with the youngest component matured for six years. Bottled at 50% ABV.
Appearance:
Rose Gold
Nose:
On the nose, sweet peat mixed with red berry fruits and lemon citrus balanced against cured meats and some paprika spice, reminiscent of chorizo.
Palate:
Begins with jammy and mouth coating red fruits on the palate, distinctive strawberry and raspberry notes. The fruits give way to smoked ham and chorizo, alongside sweet cigar tobacco which slowly shifts to bonfire smoke.
Finish:
The smoke lingers and warms on the finish, whilst in the background sweet red fruits resurge.
Comments:
Port casks have become increasingly popular for whisky maturation in the last few years, with well-known brands including Arran, GlenDronach, and Talisker all releasing core range port cask expressions. My past experience of port cask matured whiskies has been very mixed, but I really liked the balance between sweet red fruits, cured meats and smoke in this expression – very much like chorizo cooked in a port glaze. The Kilchoman Port Cask 2024 Edition is one of the best port cask matured whiskies I’ve sampled, and amongst my favourite Kilchoman releases. This is a well balanced and easy drinking whisky, and one I’m definitely restocking in my whisky cabinet.

Editor’s Note: This whiskey was either bought as a sample by The Whiskey Wash or provided to us as a review sample by the party behind it. Per our editorial policies, this in no way influenced the outcome of this review.
