Tasting Notes

About:

The non-age-stated Jim Beam Black has been a staple of the core range since 2015, with this 2024 relaunch carrying a new 7 year age statement and a 2% ABV bump. Owned by Suntory Global Spirits, the Jim Beam lineup is widely regarded as a good “bang for your buck” bourbon, with it being both easy to find and highly accessible on the palate.
Appearance:
It has quite a orange tinted polished copper hue with slight beading around the glass when swirled.
Nose:
A very dominant toasted oak hit straight on the nose as soon as it is poured into the glass. There are plenty of salted peanuts, roasted pecans, and walnuts, similar of opening a bag of fruit and nut mix. It certainly has a sweeter edge to it, sitting between burnt oranges and cherry flavoured cough syrup.
Palate:
On the first sip, the ABV feels more powerful than the 45% on the label prepares you for, offering plenty of bite, cinnamon, and burnt sugar. These notes slowly give way to dark chocolate coated toffees and thick cherry jam. With each sip, the dry oak tannins build on the tongue, while a sweet citrus and nutty edge adding satisfying depth.
Finish:
Overall this is a very oaky, dry, and slightly bitter bourbon. It leaves a medium length finish filled with notes of over brewed black tea and dark chocolate.
Comments:
From my experience, compared to the White Label, this release definitely offers more depth, making the price increase worthwhile. However, it is certainly a bourbon to reach for if you enjoy prominent burnt and toasted oak flavours. While there is a sweeter side, the intensity of the deep cherry and wood profile can make it feel more challenging than other bourbons at the same price point.
