Tasting Notes

About:

The first blend of Welsh single malt whiskies ever released to market, Brychan is released by the In the Welsh Wind distillery. Inspired by the journey of the Brychan (red kite) soaring over the fields, hills, and valleys of Wales. In the Welsh Wind Brychan Batch No.1 blends Welsh single malt whiskies matured in bourbon, port, and Banyuls red wine casks. Bottled without chill filtration at 46% ABV.
Appearance:
Pale Gold
Nose:
A gentle nose with aromas of honey and vanilla alongside a touch of milk chocolate, giving way to vinous fruits including grapes, red berries, and a hint of strawberry. In the background toasted malt echoes.
Palate:
A light gentle opening on the palate, begins with sweet notes of honey, vanilla and chocolate, before jammy red fruits including grapes, red berries, strawberry, damson and plums surge. The fruits gradually fade as an intense mix of cinnamon and toasted malt builds to dominate.
Finish:
Medium to long, a drying but warming finish of charred oak tannins and malty notes.
Comments:
In the Welsh Wind Brychan is a well-crafted blended malt balancing sweetness, red fruits and spice. Those vinous red fruit notes and flavours are clear and bold demonstrating the influence of the port and red wine casks, which reaches to the warming and drying finish dominated by oak tannins and malt. I particularly enjoyed the malty notes which echoed throughout. Brychan effectively combines the different cask types to create an approachable Welsh whisky, and leaves me curious to sample In the Welsh Wind’s future expressions.
