Tasting Notes

About:

A limited-edition single cask release from The Glasgow Distillery, this Glasgow 1770 Amontillado Sherry Cask release was bottled exclusively for UK retailer The Aberdeen Whisky Shop. Distilled on the 2nd May 2017, this single malt uses the distillery’s unpeated style, and was initially matured for 2-years and 10 months in a single ex-bourbon barrel before being re-racked into an Amontillado Sherry hogshead for a further 6-years and 2 months. Only 270 bottles were produced, bottled at natural colour and non-chill filtered at a natural cask strength of 59.1% ABV.
Appearance:
Bright Copper
Nose:
Rich and sweet aromas of hazelnut praline and milk chocolate leading floral vanilla and caramel alongside a touch of heather and lavender. The note shifts to dried fruits including raisins and sultanas accompanied by cinnamon and soft oak.
Palate:
The richness and sweetness continue on the palate, opening with vanilla and caramel then becoming increasingly chocolatey shifting from milk to dark. Mouthcoating chocolate, sherry and dried fruits becomes nuttier with hazelnuts and almonds, reminiscent of a fruit and nut chocolate bar. There are echoes of oak, pepper and cinnamon.
Finish:
A medium-long warming finish, a final flourish of nuts, sherry and chocolate before peppery oak with a touch of clove and cinnamon takes over.
Comments:
A fantastic cask choice by the team at The Aberdeen Whisky Shop for this Glasgow 1770 Amontillado Sherry Cask exclusive release, with clear notes of chocolate, nuts and sherry. This release also shows the versatility of The Glasgow Distillery which seems to continually select high-quality casks for maturation and finishing both their peated and unpeated spirits styles. One for fans of the Glasgow distillery and sherried cask strength whiskies – get this while you can. I think I need to stock up!
