Tasting Notes

About:

Copper and Kings out of Louisville Kentucky, is a “Brandy distillery in the hear of Bourbon Country.” The distillery is attempting to bring back one of America’s oldest distillates – Brandy. They’re choosing America’s beating heart of whiskey production, Louisville to do it.

The distillery boasts three flagship products: American Apple Brandy, VSOP Brandy, and Bourbon finished in Brandy Barrels.

This review deals with the American Apple Brandy Bottled-in-Bond aged in Bourbon Barrels. In marketing materials the brand explains the bourbon, “Distinctly Aged in American Oak Bourbon Barrels for a Minimum of 6 years. Delicious Apple notes naturally pull from the brandy apple base. No Additives or Added sugar.”
Appearance:
Honey with medium legs.
Nose:
Sweet and aromatic. Red apples, cinnamon, oak, cherries, candied plums, sweet and very nice overall with minimal alcohol impact.
Palate:
Cidered apples melded softly with dense fruits. There is an easy undertone of bourbon like caramel, young oak, earth tones and tea spices.
Finish:
Midway between watery and oily in the mouthfeel. After taste of dried fruit leather, hints of tannic grapes, some darker notes like burned sugar but only briefly. A nice moment of chocolate without overtaking the fruits.
Comments:
I really found this to be very enjoyable. It was reasonably complex and had nice depth to it. The bourbon flavors were complimentary but rather muted overall, which I think you want with something like an apple brandy. You find plenty of sweetness as a result of the apples but it all works well with the rest of the dram.

Overall I think this is a fun one to bring out for people who want to learn more about the diversity of drinks made in the USA. I feel the versatility of this beverage is its greatest strength and something you can do a lot with. This company is very consumer friendly, and this is a fun bottle to have on the back bar for a bit of a new take with cocktails or in a snifter.
