Compass Box The Peat Monster Review

Peat Monster is a well-balanced Islay blended malt that defies its aggressive name, offering a harmonious marriage of gentle smoke, tropical fruits, and creamy texture. This Compass Box expression showcases predominantly Caol Ila and Laphroaig single malts in a refined, approachable style.

Tasting Notes:

About:
Peat Monster is a classic Islay style blended malt, composed almost entirely of refill hogshead Caol Ila and Laphroaig single malts with a 1% Highland malt blend aged in a custom French oak cask with a heavy toast.

This is built to target the smoke-loving whisky market, though is less of a monster than the name gives off. Released with fully natural colour, non-chill filtered and at 46% ABV.
Appearance:
Quite a light ancient gold colour.
Nose:
The nose hits from uncorking the bottle with an immediate burst of juicy peaches, followed closely by a soft creamy smoke that is warm and inviting.

For me it is instantly recognisable as predominantly Caol Ila, with over 60% in the blend, with that distinctive Islay peat that’s approachable, gently maritime, and full of tropical fruits. Layers of salted butter and sweet meringue which provides a richness and summer dessert quality. There’s is also an elegant, coastal smoke like evening beach bonfire. A subtle and beautifully integrated smoky nose.
Palate:
From the very first sip, the texture is wonderfully creamy, carrying a flood of fruit and peat onto the palate. The smoke is certainly present and forms a solid, hearty backbone, but manages to not dominates this bold yet balanced flavour. Tropical notes come through with ripe mango and juicy pineapple taking centre stage, all enveloped in a smooth, creamy character.

A delicate floral note weaves its way through the dram which provides a light, refined quality that reflects just how well balanced this blend is. This graceful and delicate side seems to be something of a hallmark across the Compass Box range.
Finish:
The finish is long and lingering, with a soft, sweet smoke that continues to build. It manages to balance the sweetness of Eton mess and fruit salad sweets with a savoury undertone of gently smoked meats.
Comments:
Don’t let the name fool you, this isn’t a “peat monster” in the aggressive sense, but rather a welcoming, well-balanced peated handshake that’s likely to appeal to a wide range of whisky drinkers. I personally am a big fan of this expression and feel it’s often overlooked, perhaps because it doesn’t deliver an intense peat punch but a much more integrated smoke which allows other flavours to shine through. Combined with the excellent transparency Compass Box offers about their blends, this whisky has become a permanent fixture on my shelf and easily one of my favourite peated expressions.
